Taking a Closer Look at the NHTSA ADAS Crash Data

Plotting Each Crash on a Map

We created an interactive map that shows where each accident happened and some relevant information. Tesla Autopilot is colored in red, every other manufacturer is in blue.

Note: Since the (lat, lon) were redacted in the original data, we used the city data. Thus the map is accurate to the city-level, not street-level. A jitter is applied so markers don’t overlap.

Creating Summaries of the Data

We found the proportion of incidents for each manufacturer as well as the cumulative distribution of pre-crash speeds of the Subject Vehicle (SV) with ADAS activated. We also summarize what each vehicle was doing before it crashed, as well as what the Crash Partner (CP) did. We further break down the summaries into Tesla and non-Tesla incidents.

Available as a downloadable xlsx file.
